Southern Oregon Wildfires May Continue For Weeks; Follow These Tips to Stay Safe

Over the course of the past several days, wildfires have continued to threaten Southern Oregon’s residential areas, resulting in hazardous breathing conditions, numerous evacuations, and a declared state of emergency. Triggered by lightning or accidents, wildfires often begin unnoticed, but spread very quickly. This is why it is so important to be prepared to leave the area safely, should the need arise.

Follow these tips when faced with a dangerous situation:

Make a plan with your family
If there are reports of wildfires in your area, make sure everyone knows what to do in case of an emergency. Know what route you will take before you leave.

Be ready to leave at any moment
Keep your car ready and faced in the direction of escape, with important belongings packed inside. If you have pets, confine them to a single room in the house so you can find them quickly if forced to evacuate.

Make sure to stay informed
Stay up to date on the emergency situation. A battery-operated radio could prove useful during this time.

Immediately evacuate if asked, do not hesitate
Take emergency supplies or a disaster kit with you. Let someone know when you left and where you are going. Try to wear wool or cotton clothing that will cover your skin to protect from ashes and sparks.

If you DO have time, prepare your home
Remove fuel cans, firewood, yard waste, and other combustibles from your yard. Turn on sprinklers and soak the area as much as possible. Shut off utilities and make sure all windows, doors, and vents are closed. To ensure your home is visible in heavy smoke, turn a light on in each room.

When faced with a wildfire emergency, remember to remain calm and stay smart to ensure your safety, and the safety of others!
