Everyone has their own unique way of celebrating St. Patrick’s Day which can include a variety of traditions. For some it is their hometown parade, others enjoy a pint of green beer, and for many, it is a piping hot bowl of corned beef and cabbage.
The “Traditional” Irish dish of corned beef and cabbage is actually an Irish American Tradition. According to history.com the true traditional Irish dish is Irish bacon or a bacon joint served with cabbage. Beef was not something that was readily available in Ireland. It was not until the Irish immigrated to the U.S. where beef was plentiful and less expensive that a new tradition was born.
The website europeancuisines.com claims that finding a corned beef and hash recipe in Ireland is hard to come by. That is definitely not the case here in the U.S. One day a year just about everyone we know is at least part Irish. The Irish American Tradition of corned beef and cabbage is served in homes all across the country. If you are planning to join the festivities with your own Irish dinner the Le Creuset Dutch Oven available at The Kitchen Company is a great place to start.
According to storeowner Roy Heinzle, this beautiful kitchen necessity is unique in its birth. Each oven is made from one sand mold, using only the best quality cast iron. Many of the Dutch ovens you see on department stores are made in China where there is little if any regulation. “They could pick up any metal from anywhere (including an engine block) melt it down and turn it into a Dutch oven.” The French, however, have strict guidelines and produce a beautiful, functional and safe Dutch oven.
Why a Dutch Oven for your Corned Beef and Cabbage dinner?
You can start out on the stovetop and brown your beef, move it to the oven to finish cooking along with the cabbage. The heavy lid keeps the juices in and the beef self bastes itself. Then just take it directly from the oven to the table. The heat is evenly distributed and your meal will still be quite warm when people go back for seconds. “It is a beautiful presentation right from the oven,” said Nadine Schmidt a local decorator and enthusiastic cook.
Worried about clean up? Don’t be. The inside is covered in enamel and after soaking for a bit the stuck on food and stains that may be left behind in other cookware, easily wipes off.
Of course your St. Patty’s day celebration may also include you partaking in a few libations. These gorgeous green Fire and Light glasses would attract a lot of attention at your dinner party. This handcrafted glassware is made in Arcata, California and most are made out of over 90% recycled glass. There is an entire line of colorful dinnerware to choose from. Buy them all in one color, or make each setting a different color for a fun change!
