Southern Oregon Fires Blaze As Oregon Health News Warns Residents To Stay Inside

For those of us who live in Grants Pass, Oregon – the sky has almost an apocalyptic look and feel. The sun is a bright red ball and breathing easy is something we no longer take for granted. These are the sentiments of several local residents as fires continue to rage in Southern Oregon.

The best advice we can you give right now is to stay indoors. If you have to drive to work, make sure your air conditioner is on (recirculate air) during the drive and keep your windows up.

“There are several things residents can do to minimize irritation to eyes, throat and lungs”, said OHN journalist Sarah Stevens.

Keep the indoor A/C running. Close all doors and windows in your home. Don’t physically exert yourself. Don’t stir up dust particles by vacuuming, and If you have asthma, lung disease or any respiratory issues, contact your physician immediately if symptoms increase.

Infants and the elderly are often at a greater risk from exposure and should be watched closely. Many residents at high risk are leaving the area while the firefighters continue to tackle several fires.

Governor, John Kitzhaber, has declared a state of emergency for both Josephine and Douglas counties in Southern Oregon, which will allow the National Guard to come and assist in fire suppression efforts.

Other advice includes keeping your pets indoors when possible and making sure to drink plenty of water. Wear something to cover your face, and use extreme caution while outdoors. Fires are unpredictable and the air quality can change drastically in a very short time.

Remember that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure;  you may want to take that upcoming trip you were planning a little bit sooner this year.
